Forest vegetation

Floodplain forest vegetation develops on river sediments on the river floodplain. It is probably the oldest type of floodplain vegetation on our planet. After all, thickets of rhinophytes (Rhyniophyta) can already be considered its prototype. Given this, one of the oldest components of floodplain forests known from the territory of Ukraine, and at the same time present in its modern flora, are probably members of the family of fern (Ophioglossaceae). In particular, representatives of the genera Ophioglossum and Ophioglossumsporites are known from the Cretaceous deposits of Ukraine (Valangin-Alb, 131-108 million years ago) (Voronova, 1994).
